"Rico" is a Blue and Gold x Calico Macaw, a hybrid macaw whose parents are a Calico Macaw father and a Blue and Gold Macaw mother. One of its parents, the Blue and Gold Macaw, is a species of naturally occurring macaws while the other, the Calico Macaw, is also a hybrid macaw. Hybrid macaws are bred for color, and this bird demonstrates some very strong color influences from its parentage. The Blue and Gold x Calico Macaw is a second generation hybrid macaw and was developed from these crossings:
•1st - Green-winged Macaw crossed with a Military Macaw = Calico Macaw
•2nd - Calico Macaw crossed with a Blue and Gold Macaw = Harligold Macaw
Because hybrid macaws are a mixture of more than one type of macaw, the offspring are influenced by the traits and characteristics of both of its parents. Father's have the dominant gene, so this will generally influence the offspring's coloration and overall appearance.
With one parent, the Calico Macaw, (having a Military Macaw and a Green-winged Macaw for its parents) you have a hybrid macaw that is a real beauty and good natured. The Calico's Greenwing parent is a very popular macaw and renowned not only for its beauty, but also for its sweet nature. Its other parent, the Military Macaw is also a favorite pet because of its good temperament, intelligence and trainability.
Crossing the Calico Macaw with the Blue and Gold Macaw brings additional variety to the Blue and Gold x Calico Macaw. The Blue and Gold itself is another very popular and pretty bird, well known for its sweet nature and speaking ability. The resulting hybrid is a complex of colors creating a very pretty, vibrantly colored bird.
The behavior and temperament of hybrid macaws are more unpredictable and uncertain than the coloration. Blue and Gold x Calico Macaws are a hybrid parrot that are very colorful with the intelligence and temperament of its parents. The pet Blue and Gold x Calico should be quite trainable, learn to talk and do tricks, and have an amiable nature. These macaw can be a very affectionate, inquisitive, and fun companions. As with all macaws, they will require good socialization and consistent training to make good pets.
